Even notice the Yogi Bear wears a hat, collar and tie... but NO PANTS! That's level of contempt for the audience drives me insane! I've kicked in many a tv screen when that cartoon came on! It's always PISSED ME THE HELL OFF!!!
No, not really. Bug's Life is a cartoony cartoon, meaning it gets a pass for some things. If they had flick teleporting for no reason or something too crazy then it's to nutty. But ants speaking English, have big Disney style human eyes, walking upright, and building fake birds doesn't bother me because it's an animated cartoon.
I've never seen lavender ants...
shareI'm pretty sure that they were given 4 limbs to keep them from looking too awkward. Aside from a few of the "circus bugs" (Dim, Slim, Heimlich, Rosie, Tuck and Roll) the grasshoppers are the only other bugs with six legs. It seems to work for the group of grasshoppers. It makes them more foreign and somewhat more menacing.
For the ants, though, they'd want them to see more human. Makes them more relatable. Plus, A Bug's Life had incredible crowd shots. Many of the ants in the shots (maybe all? I can't quite remember) were crafted one-by-one by animators, including their movements. I imagine that those shots would be much, much harder if they had an extra pair of limbs on every character to worry about, it would have made these shots that much harder.
Plus the observation that the ants in the movie Antz had 3 pairs of limbs and they frankly looked bizarre. They are a good example of how the psychology of the audience has to be considered. Even if the characters having six limbs, or even being majority female, is technically correct, it is far better for the film for the characters (especially the protagonists) to be as relatable as possible for the audience.
Didn't the spider have 6 legs?
I'm probably mistaken.

"I guess I can see how it would be powerful back in 99, but not in 2013..sorry."
I have recently visited the exhibition "Pixar: 25 Years of Animation", that is currently in Amsterdam. There was a drawing of Dot with six legs with a sort of confused look on her face and someone had handwritten: "Dot doesn't look as cute with six legs" on the paper.
