Wouldn't the grasshoppers just come back later after the bird leaves?
This has always bothered me.
shareThis has always bothered me.
shareProbably, which is why standing up for themselves and finding their own strength and self respect was always going to be the better answer.
shareWell we see that they are able to get food from other sources. Like most predators, they will go for the easiest meal. If there is a bird around that can attack them at any time they would rather go someplace else for the food.
Also Hopper had a really bad traumatic experience with a bird which would make him panic and not want to come back.
Plus we do see the plan failing at the end and that they still needed to stand up for themselves and realize their was strength in numbers.

I think the idea was to make the grasshoppers think that a bird was nesting in the tree.
sharePart of the plan was that they had a lot of bugs pretending to be dismembered and dying. If Hopper assumed that most of the ants were dead, he wouldnt bother coming back.
Also, Hopper was very afraid of birds. If he made a cowardly retreat in front of the ants and they saw it, he would have a much harder time returning and playing the strong bad guy card on them.
I think a bird attack (as told by Molt) was the cause for the scar on Hopper's face.
