Theory about Hopper
His main motivation for wanting to rule over the ants is explained in the scene when he snarls at Molt and tells him if he hadn't promised his mother to not kill Molt he would do so.
I think he wants to live up to his family legacy by helping the grasshoppers stay on top of the food chain because otherwise he'd have no reason for living.
