It looked to me at the beginning of the film as though Hank and Darlene are a couple, when she comes up to his apartment to give him the package and then leave again in the rain. However, it is clear in the film while they are in Thailand that he is married to the Thai woman Yon. Did he and his wife split up and he is with Darlene while they are both fighting to free Alice?

She was getting their mail in the beginning of the movie, which had the letter from Alice which she wrote while still in jail with Darlene. The setup of the movie that includes the occasional voice over from Alice is the flashback demonstration of the letter.
