Alice new she was stronger
and could survive longer than Darlene. thats why she lied at the end . she loved her friend that much that it didn;t matter if she would be left alone, and it didn;t matter to her if she was innocent.

sharethats true you can see it through out the whole movie
shareDo you think the movie made left open the "possibility" that Alice really knew about the drugs? I loved the film, but it seemed to leave her guilt/innocence in question. She was strong, but perhaps she was swayed by the charismatic conman to do this one little thing for him. I mean, why else wouldn't she have opened up those containers unless she knew the smack was there? I know this is a story of strength and friendship, but could it also have been one of taking responsibility for a bad decision?

OK, so what's the speed of dark?
I agree with you here. I do believe Alice did it (but it's a long story why so I'm not getting into it) but yes, it is left ambiguos anyway. She did take responsibility for herself at the end, for the first time in her life (as Darlene's father pegged it; always saying "I didn't do it" even when she clearly did.) It was a new, freeing feeling for her.
I don't think she was swayed by Nick in as much as she truly believed she'd get away with such a dangerous act.
I don't think Alice did it. When she yelled "I DIDNT DO IT" to Darlene's dad... she does it so fierce and emotionally where you kinda know that she didnt do it. And at the end, in my eyes, i thought without a doubt that she didn't do it. She tried to escape, and to take the blame for herself and Darlene is a huge thing, huge. Spending a lifetime in a rotten prison in a rotten cell...
Bishop O'Hara: You took a vow of hospitality for all in need.
Rev. Mother: I lied.
When she yelled "I DIDN'T DO IT!" to Darlene's dad... she does it so fierce and emotionally where you kinda know that she didn't do it.I think that the purpose of this scene was to show the consequences of lying. The way Darlene's father put it, Alice got caught lying so many times that by then he has labeled her as a compulsive liar, did not trust her any longer and did not believe a word that she said. The whole irony here is that this time Alice was telling the truth, but because of how she was viewed by Darlene's father, he did not believe her. share
I think Alice was innocent, just the way she portrayed her character you could tell that she was clearly innocent. I'm not to sure about Darlene but I'm leaning towards they where both innocent. Not to mention when I pressed info on the movie (it was on tv) it said "two girls framed for drug trafficking spend time in a Thai prison". Also the fact that there stories are the same, I dunno I just think they are innocent. Considering Thailand is a third world hell hole with an extremely corrupt goverment. Darlene seems to naive and to innocent to actually help some guy smuggle drugs. She was disgusted with the fact that Alice was smoking a joint, I highly doubt she'd be down for carrying some down.

Ethnocentric, are we?! And other goverments (including the States) aren't corrupt? All are. Some just have more money/influence to hide it better.
We all know both are innocent. And though it
seems a fantasy I'd like to think Alice is long
been released from that prison and even took
some college courses.A girl can dream, right?
I believe they were both innocent, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He used them & set them up. Teens like to think they are all grown up & so smart when in reality, it's far from the truth. Being so naive didn't help either. I am glad I never had the money or the guts to ever do anything like that cause I could see that happening to me back then. I was just as naive!

Being young, naïve, and overly trusting is a prison sentence in itself.

There's nothing ethnocentric about the original comment, it doesn't matter what ethnicity the people there are, it is a third world hell hole. I've been there, I know this as I have seen it with my own eyes. Corruption is far beyond what we see here- my friends there do not even blink at everyday corruption such as getting pulled over by cops for speeding or for no reason at all, and having to give them some cash to let you go with "no problems".
Fictionally speaking I hope Alice by some miracle does get out of that
hell hole while she's still young.
