Parallels real life.
I just saw this movie currently. As it unfolded it was very similar to a real case I was involved with in the 1990s. Two teen girls from a Central American country were arrested at a US airport when drug-sniffing dogs alerted on their luggage. They spent some time in jail awaiting trial. They didn't speak English. They said a man had bought their plane tickets and had asked them to each check a suitcase, each of which had kilos of cocaine. The man was never found.
However their fate turned out different. I was the jury foreman, we didn't agree that the prosecution had proven its case and we returned a verdict of "not guilty."
Did they really know they were carrying drugs? We will never know for sure, but things like this really do happen.
