Which was more difficult to watch? I enjoyed both movies but thought BP was harder to watch. Maybe because I'm a female and can relate to the characters and I don't do drug so to get thrown in jail for something I've never ever done would be even more devastating. At least in RTP the men were actually sort of "guilty".
For me Return to Paradise was definitely more difficult to watch, mainly because of what happens at the end. Yes, in RTP these men are sort of "guilty", but it's also implied that majority of tourists in Malaysia were smoking hash, so Lewis was just unlucky enough to get caught. Many people from the developed nations would easily agree that punishment does not fit the crime in either of those movies.
Also, there are similar corruption subplots: in BP the minister of justice goes back on his word, in RTP the judge does the same. Although in RTP the results are far more dramatic. In BP, Darlene is set free and Alice finds happiness and freedom within her after what she's done; IMO I would consider that a happier ending compared to what happens in RTP.
