Maria Full of Grace is excellent.
shareI wanted to see that but the dvd shop doesnt have it. Thanks.
shareAmazon.com is selling it for about $7 - might be worth it if you really want to see it.
BTW, do you recommend Return to Paradise?
I saw Return to Paradise by accident when I was flicking through channels. Its not too bad, if you like movies about drugs in South East Asia.
shareWe just watched Return to Paradise last night. It made me think of Brokedown Palace. Good movie, but sad. Joaquin (sp?) Pheonix did a GREAT job in that movie.
Another good trafficking movie (except it's sex trafficking, not drugs) is Trade. It is absolutely heartbreaking to watch and know this actually goes on, but IMO it's one of the best trafficking movies ever. It really opens your eyes to the horror of sex trafficking. Part of it is in subtitles, but the majority is english.

Lilya 4-Ever
Sorry, Stirchley - I didn't word that correctly regarding Lilya forever. At the time I recieved it from netflix our dvd player was multi-regional. But when we bought our bigscreen tv, my husband bought a new surround systems/dvd player (which is NOT multi-regional - it only plays the region 1 dvd's - america & canada). He put the old (multiregional) dvd player on the smaller tv in the bedroom. Lilya 4ever has never been released in region 1 for america & canada, so it irks me that I cannot watch it on my bigscreen tv lol.
(Another thing about netflix - this has happened twice so far - they have sent me region 2 dvd's for 2 movies - the newest Chronicles of Narnia and that movie about the rockclimber who had to cut his own arm off when he got stuck between 2 rocks (good movie, but cannot remember the name of it btw), so we're stuck watching it in the bedroom, on the smaller tv, with 3 dogs & 2 cats on the bed - not very comfortable lol! So, the moral of the story is when buying a dvd player, make sure and get a multi-regional player.)

Sorry - I'm not very good at explaining stuff lol ... Here's a little info on DVD region coding:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
Basically, many movies are released only in the region they are filmed or distributed in (Lilya 4 Ever is only distributed in the European region - region 2, I think.) Netflix has just about every foreign movie ever made, whether it's region 1, 2, 3, etc. It's possible they were able to get around the region code somehow with many of their movies (I don't know if that's a possibility or not).
It's possible you might not be able to play the movie in your dvd player because it has only been released in region 2 (europe). DVD players sold in america are usually region 0 (plays movies released/coded in 1 thru 6) or region 1 (plays movies that are only released/coded as region 1).
Depending on your dvd player (if it's not a 0), you might be able to find info on how to make your dvd a region-free player. I've always been somewhat scared to do this cause I can see me screwing up my dvd player lol. It's also possible your dvd player is region-free or multi-region without you knowing it. I was never aware of this until I started getting into watching foreign movies. Also, most blu-ray players will play several regions. I hope this helps ... (Definitely get the movie sent to you ... because it's possible netflix was able to get around the region code.)

Red Corner with Richard Gere and Bai Ling is about an American businessman falsely accussed of murder in China and put before the communist judicial system there. I think that movie is far superior than this one in terms of the acting and plot, much more exciting especially the final showdown. China actually is a communist country (though not really socialist) while Thailand supposedly is a democracy.
Recently HBO came out with a movie about the REAL LIFE Amanda Knox story which is set in Italy (another supposedly democratic country, a Western country no less). I'm sure you've heard about that case it was all over the news. Amanda is an American student falsely accussed of murder by an Italian court and sentenced to 23 years in prison, her appeal is ongoing right now.
Terrapin - is that the movie that ran on Lifetime here a few weeks ago? (about Amanda Knox) ... that was a really good movie and got me very interested in the case. After watching the movie, I started reading more and more and realized they didn't have a shred of evidence against this poor girl! I feel so sorry for her and her family!

If you don't mind watching videos on YouTube, there's a few movies/documentaries that are currently posted:
- Bangkok Hilton (with Nicole Kidman) - Australian woman in Thai prison after unknowingly being set up by a charming guy to smuggle heroin (it's a 5-part mini-series, actually).
- Dadah is Death - true story of two Australian men who were executed in Malaysia for smuggling heroin (a 2-part miniseries).
- many episodes of Locked Up Abroad (or Banged Up Abroad) from the National Geographic channel - many episodes are about westerners in prison in foreign countries (including two stories in Thailand) for smuggling drugs.
There's lots of great stuff to watch because there are so many true stories. When I first found episodes of Locked Up Abroad on YouTube, I remember that I stayed up all night watching them.
Enjoy!
Locked Up Abroad.

I don't feel that the Amanda Knox story fits in this genre of films where the innocent are wrongly accused in another country. First of all, I live in Italy half of the time and it's a fair country. They would not have (for example) EVER let Casey Anthony get away with what she did. But more importantly, Amanda Knox is not just some innocent "mule". She is at leaast complicitous in the murder. At least....and maybe even then some. We'll never know now that she's been aquitted.
I enjoyed Brokedown Palace. Clare Danes' character was so much stronger than Beckinsales' whiney baby, spoiled child character. I hated her dad and wanted to dry gulch the bitch.
The best equivalent to this is Return to Paradise which is also brilliant because of the wonderful acting, particularly on the part of Joaquin Phoenix. But Vince Vaughn is right there...really close. They're amazing acting makes the film incredible...just like Brokedown Palace. One is in Thailand (BP) and the other Malyasia (RTP). But the stories are very similar.
Bangkok Hilton: An Australian TV Mini-Series that left me astonished with the great and compelling performance of the leading actress, unknown at that time. I was a teenager and watched on TV in 1990.
I knew she was a great actress after watching it, but I could not imagine she, Nicole Kidman, who plays brilliantly the part of Katrina Stanton, would become as recognized as she is nowadays, all over the world.
I agree, Bangkok Hilton is AMAZING
MUCH better than "Brokedown Palace", which comes across rather cheesy in comparison with "Bangkok Hilton"
Highly recommended

I read somewhere that this 2007 episode of Locked Up Abroad inspired Brokedown Palace which was loosely based on it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0m7EaaBMjA
Difference being these girls colluded with it, Brokedown Palace leaves a vague question mark - did one of them know and cooperate? there was some rivalry and deceit over the guy who set them up
