The existence of the Mummy and his magic implies the existence of the pantheon of Egyptian gods and goddesses. Bastet is a goddess associated with cats (she is depicted with a cat head). Since Bastet is associated with Ra and the bulk of the "good" gods and is definitely called on against evil spirits, I think we can assume that Imhotep is worried by any sign of her presence.
