Beloved was the child of Sethe (Oprah) and her husband Halle. In the novel, Halle never made it to 124 Blueridge, and so 18 years later, Paul D. and Sethe started a relationship.
It is kinda disturbing though, b/c Paul D has sex with mother and (dead) daughter.
