Ok can someone explain the ending to me. I didn't get why Setha killed only Beloved, but not the boys. When she throw Denver against her dad and she didn't die??? I also didn't get anything after Beloved getting pregant. Please tell me. Why did Beloved haunt the house, if all she wanted was to be with Setha. Why did the boys run away if they knew it was their sister??? Thank you.
That was not Denver's dad, Stamp Paid (who helped Sethe Get into Ohio because he is friends with Sethe's mother in law) just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Beloved haunting of the house was her way of being with Sethe.
What didn't you get after Beloved became pregnant with Paul D's child? You can be literal about it and think that Beloved was an acutal person or just or just a personification of the past and the past tramaus that everyone had experienced.
I am not sure if the boys knew the ghost was Beloved, anyway they did not want to be in the haunted house anymore becuase of what Beloved did, Throwing the dog around, taking away their food, breaking mirrors.
Beloved's pregnancy was supposed to signify her consuming Sethe's soul-- in teh book, sethe is supposed to get smaller and sickly as she slowly loses her sanity, and beloved gains her mother's life in a parallel to when her mother ended hers. read the book, if you want. i haven't seen the whole movie, but the book is less weird. not a whole lot less, though...
Sethe was trying to kill all of her children to keep them free from slavery, but only succeeded in killing Beloved before the men arrived to take her away. Beloved can be seen as pregnant in both a litteral and figurative way. She can be seen as pregnant with Paul D.'s child, as suggested by their relationship, but it also portrays Beloved's consummation of Sethe - in the novel, Sethe becomes smaller and weaker as Beloved feeds off of her life, growing bigger and bigger. Beloved haunted the house because she knew of no other way to be with Sethe. Remember that her spirit was that of a baby who just wanted to be with her mother. Although Beloved comes to Sethe, Denver and Paul D. as a young woman, she still has the soul and overall mentality of an infant. The boys left the house because they just couldn't take it any longer. I don't think that they fully knew that it was their sister doing the haunting, and they especially did not know the full story behind Beloved's death. These are some very good questions posed, ones that I would have definitely had if I had not thoroughly anylized the book in AP English class before seeing the movie. I attempted reading the book three times before this and could not get past the first few pages, but after knowing the movie, it may be easier to read - I would strongly reccomend reading the book for the full effect of the story.
1.Seth tried to kill all of the kids but she was only successful in killing one. 2. I think she put paul d in some type of trance. i guess she did it out of jealousy and because she didn't want him around seth, also paul d was beginning to ask to many questions so she did it to drive a wedge between the two and run him away. 3. the boys, I think ran away for 2 reasons: because all of there life they had been living in the "crazy house" and people treated them the same and well, even though beloved was their little sister, she was still able to do real damage and hurt them (like she had done the dog). I can imagine beloved was a toddler from hell throwing a tandrum.
