shareI just saw Beloved and the Color Purple yesterday morning after wanting to see them for years. I agree soo much so w/ the fact that Beloved should have gotten better award stances. I believe on an E! special it said something about the fact that the R rating and severe Oprah backlash caused this movie to do so poorly in the Box Office. I also believe they said it was filmed over like a few years so possibly the long time it took for filming could have hindered it. All I know is maybe w/ the Color Purple coming to it's 20th anniversary, they will do a special re-release of it and Beloved w/ some others and Beloved will reach a whole new crowd.
shareActually, I think comparing Beloved to "Color Purple" is an insult to the "Color Purple". "Color Purple" was a more compassionate film, and treated the subjects as such. It is a strong and poignant story of an African-American woman's struggle. "Beloved" was pseudo-art; it tries to make a point, but with the exception of the main character's daughter, wallows in self-pity. If anything, I felt that "Color Purple" was extremely underrated and deserved an Oscar for not only Whoopi Goldberg's performance, but for the story adaptation as well. "Beloved" was quite frankly overhyped and justly criticized. If Oprah had not been in this film or had not advertised it, I don't think this movie would have been looked at, not to mention given any critical appeal. "Beloved" is really just another C grade art-school film with $40 million (or more) spent on it. Oprah should stick to her kiss-a** routine that she's got bored housewives hooked on.
shareHave any of you bothered reading the book. The movie is crap. I hated the Exorcist feel that Thandie Newton brought to the character Beloved (she is usually a wonderful actress). Toni Morrison quite rightly completely disowned the movie and i'm sure if it was my novel I would have done too.
shareShe was involved in the making of the movie, Morrison did not disown it.
shareyeah, she WAS involved. Hey, aren't they gonna make "Paradise" also. Can't WAIT for THAT one!!!!
"If I HAVE to, I WILL"
my grandma-
I read an article where Toni Morrison was quoted saying that she hated and totally disowned the movie, why would she say that if she liked it. Anyway they left out some of the most important parts, from the book, trust me Toni Morrison wouldn't let that happen.

it's fine if you don't like the movie, it's fine to voice your opinion, but please make sure that the things you say ARE FACTS.
Toni Morrison is an absolutely tongue-n-cheek and outspoken woman. And if she did in fact "DISOWNED" the movie as you say, She wouldn't go around praising it to this day.
I have seen her speak twice and both times someone asked about the movie and she said both times how much she enjoyed the experience of working with the producers and how much she enjoyed the film.
Stick with the facts.
Regan: What an excellent day for an exorcism
To me , it was scandalous that the filmmakers and actors were not recognized, especially in an Oscar year were the controversial Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan, both of which have their detractors.
(Although I don't think SiL would have detractors if it hadn't won the Oscar. It is a great film, just not Best Picture great. Ditto for Rain Man, in my opinion.)
The Nimble, Limber One.
Did it touch you on your inside part? Because I thought the book and the movie sucked.
shareI agree, BELOVED is an excellent film.
It has strong imagery and good performances, and the compelling story is told very intriguingly.
Parts of it remind me of the stories my mother always told me about the Emerald Belt, Indonesia which also has a rich ghost & magic culture.

I totally agree, KittyKat. The movie and the book were a complete waste of time.

The film is INCREDIBLE !!!
Maybe some people don't like it becasue they don't understand it?
I don't know, but I do NOT understand why this film did not receive more critical praise ~& more revenue !! It is very good. ALL of the acting is superb. It is one of my favorite movies, of all time. I could watch it, at any time, & be happy to have gotten the chance/gift. It is THAT good. It's deep & it's dark (in places), but it is worth the investment required.
(In this instance, I liked the movie more than the book. -btw)
I heard Beah Richards was furious over the scene where the guys are drinking young Sethe's milk like a water fountain!
shareawww, were you offended....imagine how the many slaves who actually endured such horror must of felt
shareI would not doubt for one second that what you stated is truth chemiche3. Beah was much too outstanding of an actress to put up with the lame and overdone result of such a film. The movie tried just a little bit too hard. to be a hit. Even Bizet composed a piece or two that may not have been in his best creative interest. Even an artistic genius such as Morrison is and will always be so may blunder and create something that is simply trash as she did with this one. I would like to think Beah realized this and perhaps she just wanted to work and trusted this infinitestimal work of Morrison to be a hit.
shareI agree. It is one of the best movies i have seen, imagery, actor perfomance, it is really good. I can't believe how underrated this gem is.
