I read the book- it made the movie look even worse!
I think this movie is one of the worst ever made. I felt nothing but disgust for all of the characters in this appalling movie. Sethe was a beautiful ex-slave, so why in hell did Oprah think she was an appropriate choice for the character? In the book, Beloved was childish and strange. Not the disgusting mess we witness in the film. They seemed like two completely different characters to me. All the vomiting, tantrums, bugs, and sloppy eating were not in the book. She spoke like a toddler in the book, in the film she spoke like she was not only mentally deranged, but challenged. I knew this movie was terrible, but I didn't know how bad it really was until I read the book. The book was pretty good. It held my attention. I wouldn't say it was a masterpiece, as it has been described by some, but an ok book. As it got toward the end, the book became a bit ridiculous. There is a chapter with Beloved talking to the reader. She describes where she had been before she came to 124, and it was not only bizzare, but stupid. All that talk about the men without skin, the hot thing, and the dead man on her face was just plain stupid. Hardly a masterpiece. It is, however, far superior to the movie. If this book had been put into the right hands, it could have been a good movie. Sadly, Oprah got her hands on it first. I used to be a minor fan of Oprah, but she really just got too big for her britches (quite a feat). I believe she thinks everything she touches turns to gold. Unfortunatly, her fanatical, screaming, middle-aged, housewife fans will think everything she does is, in fact, gold (and maybe she'll give them some of it on her favorite things show). Like my mother once told me, "just because your rich and famous, it doesn't mean you have a lick of sense". Too true.
