Loved Beloved book AND movie
I loved Beloved the book. I truly did. When I first tried to read it more than 20 years ago based on a college friend's recommendation, I'll admit it was difficult and quit. She suggested that I give it second try, but encouraged me to read at least five to six chapters in one sitting. I'm so glad I read it! Because of that dear college friend who introduced me to "Beloved," Toni Morrison is my favorite writer and this is my favorite book by her!
With that disclaimer, I'll admit that I was concerned about this book being made into a film. I thought to myself, how can this account of slavery and post-slavery events and the psychological effects on former slaves be portrayed in film? However, after I saw the film, I was impressed with Mr. Demme's direction and Ms. Winfrey's portrayal of Sethe. (At the time of the film, I wasn't an Oprah fan, but gave her great respect and admiration for her influence in getting the film made and for her depiction of Sethe on film.)
If it has been mentioned in a previous post, please forgive me. I recall reading that Ms. Morrison was inspired to write this because of a real account of a slave woman, Margaret Garner, who killed her daughter rather than subject her daughter to slavery.
I know many people don't like the book or film. To each his own. We all like different things.
