Directors Cut - Possible?

Hi i read somewhere that I think either Edward Norton or Tony Kaye destroyed all the prints of the Directors Cut. so it wouldn't be possible to release it, but that's impossible because footage of the directors cut exits...

I think what they destroyed was the off-line edit they made on tape, but the negative of all the footage still exists.
