Boogie Nights ripoff

I saw this film tonight and during the opening monologue it was clear that Miramax decided to greenlight this film as soon as Boogie Nights took off. Otherwise I woulda really given it a chance.

Mike Myers really showed that he could play a serious role if he wanted to.

Yeah, I agree with you. 54 solely ripped off the classic Boogie Nights. Only Mike Myers was good in the film

reply

54 is loosly based on real events

reply

Yeah dude, so is Pearl Harbor but it is still a rip off of Titanic.

Masters of the Universe got the Star Wars treatment, Peter Pan (2003) get the Harry Potter treatment and Narnia looks like a cross between Potter and Lord of the Rings. Its pretty much the direction the studios took these project in an attempt to cash in on something else that was sucessful.

oh, it's a total ripoff of Boogie Nights. I was saying that right after I saw it.

Just because both films have as their central character a young good looking guy working in a club doesn't make one a ripoff of the other. It's incredible and very sad that there are so many self-proclaimed film critics coming in here to make ignorant comments about movies when all their comments prove is how ignorant, illiterate, unimaginative, narrow-minded, and just plain STUPID they are.

I think the similarities btwn it and Boogie Nights go beyond the fact that they both have "a young good looking guy working in a club".

Besides the obvious similarity of same timeframe (late 70s/early 80s), they both share the same type of themes as well. They also both portray their stories in a very end-of-an-era type of way, with the main party revolving around the scene they were so much a part of. One movie was in LA, the other in NYC.

There are MANY other similarities.

That was my point exactly, DarkStar. It doesn't matter how many points of similarity there are, it doesn't make one a ripoff of the other. God, are they really raising kids that dumb these days? They ought to require you to pass a class and grow a brain before allowing you onto sites like this.

funny, i just figured people like you always passed a How To Be Unnecessarily Obnoxious in order to come onto sites like this.

what similarities is everyone talking about? Boogie nights is about a guy in the porn industry and 54 is about a bartender who worked in the studio 54, they might have similarities in the style of clothes, the drugs and partying...but thats because they both take place in the 70's what else would they do make 54 set in 98, that wouldn't make sense. They may have come out at the same time but alot of movies do that...I doubt it was a direct ripoff, alot of screenplays stay innactive for a long time before they come into theater, so maybe Boogie Nights came out, did well, and someone said hey lets try this 54 script we have. It may have ridden the coat tails but it wasnt a direct rip off.

I must admit there is a Boogie Nights feel to this movie.. But I still love it.. I love both Boogie Nights and 54.. 54 has a lot of weaknesses.. The actors aren't that good, the script isn't that good either.. But Mike Myer's performance on its own makes this movie worth it. And you just forget about all those weaknesses as the movie goes.. The music takes you and you feel like you're part of them. It ends up as a very believable movie and that's what makes it so good.
