what an ineptly written and directed film...despite the presence of some well known faces, including an amusing, if hammy, mike myers, this movie is like a primer on bad filmmaking. there is no central character to root for (paul thomas anderson knew how to make the stupid dirk diggler engaging), the film jumps all over the place, there is no real sense of geography...and i've seen the director's cut - it has a little more environmental risque behavior, but it's still a movie with no one to root for and a far from compelling narrative. see last days of disco for another look at this era, but with writing that doesn't insult the dumbest person's intelligence - even if that movie's a bit of a downer.
