So it's esentially just a tamer, less explicit version of Boogie Nights?

If that is the case, why would anyone even boither when you can just watch Boogie Nights instead?

Actually no. Boogie Nights takes place in LA and is about the porn industry, while 54 is about, well, Studio 54 and the disco scene of New York. Same era, completely different aspects of that era.

They are two totally different stories. 54 is based on the famous nightclub Studio 54 and Boogie Nights is based on the porn industry in the last 70s/early 80s.

Although 54 is not based on a true story. It is a somewhat accurate portrayal of the actual nightclub. The Mike Meyers character Steve Rubbell was a pretty accurate portrayal.

Another huge difference, 'Boogie Nights' has rich character development which tells us about a different time by giving us characters we relate to and care about. 54 gives us a tacked on, largely irrelevant story with shallow, predictable characters.

These films couldn't be more different where it counts.

The director's cut of 54 fixes that problem to a sizable degree, in fairness.
