Why insert fictional characters into an already compelling story?
I liked the series, but i didn't love it. Part of what bugged me was the completely unnecessary fictional Emmett Seaborn character as well as the entire Apollo 13 episode about a fictional story involving fictional newscasters on a fictional network.
It's a great idea and makes perfect sense to have an episode of the miniseries be about the relationship between the press and NASA during the moon landings, but given the fact there were memorable newscasters like Walter Conkrite (who was REAL) who actually covered the story, why not tell the actual story with actors portraying the real people? In this instance, fabricating someone and then inserting them into history just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
