Wishmaster 1 vs Wishmaster 2 (spoilers for both movies)

I'm not sure if I'm posting this on the right board but I just finished watching both movies back to back and I concluded that Wishmaster is overall the better film, despite the awesome cameos from all the horror icons. I find 2 better directed and it makes better use of the Demarest character than 1. I also thought the Djinn looked better in 2. Also, the ending of 2 is more clever than 1. I don't think the 2nd is that much better than 1, just slightly. My huge problem with the 2nd one is that it begins with a massive plot hole and the Djinn doesn't really grant the wishes correctly.
What do you guys think? I think both are very enjoyable, yet very cheesy movies but I enjoyed number 2 slightly more after several viewings.

I feel the same way. I think it's because the first one spent more time on the heroine's trying to figure out what's going on and how to stop it, while the second one spent more time on the Djinn's evil mischief. Then there was the whole prison and Las Vegas storylines that added more.

Oh good, someone agrees with me! :) I thought it might have also been some kind of novelty effect. I've seen the first Wishmaster so many times that seems to have become predictable. I also found myself really annoyed at the contrived jump scares, even minutes after they were over. They were so badly done. The music cues also got on my nerves after a while. When you see a movie enough times, you start to focus on the little details. I think I only saw the 2nd one a couple of times and that was a few years ago. Despite all that, Wishmaster 1 still looks and feels a lot more amateurish then the 2nd movie. And you're right about the prison and Vegas scenes. They made the movie for me. The heroine and the priest in #2, I could take or leave but their limited presence in the movie made them more tolerable.

Both have their pros and cons. While the first one concentrated on the main character trying to figure out the mystery of the Djinn, the second one was more about Demerest, which I liked more. I didn't enjoy the Christian imagery in the sequel while the make-up work was better. The SFX is amazing in both of them.

Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh!
