Lord Mark vs Millie

After watching Wings of the Dove again, I got to thinking how much more interesting it could have been if it would have shown Lord Mark telling Millie about Kate and Merton. Just the way he would have told her and her response and then throwing him out.. I think it would have been a dramatic and powerful scene. Agree? Disagree?

I disagree, in the spirit of keeping the movie the way Henry James wrote it. There is no such scene in the book, rather MANY significant parts of the book are left to the reader to imagine. James forces the reader to assume what happened. In the book, it's not 100% clear what Lord Mark told Millie, if anything at all. Perhaps Millie just knew about Kate and Merton herself, or from some other way. Leaving it out of the book creates uncertainty for the reader. The movie shouldn't have a scene like that because the whole point is that you're not supposed to know (and the book doesn't let you know what happens either) ...it's more mysterious that way. And it's the way Henry James intended it to be.

Ok, cool, thanks for your opinion. I think Millie knew all along also.

Yes, however the movie is far more clear on this issue. It's good though that the director left us with a bit of uncertainty with regards to this scene.
