I have to watch the movie for an English class but I missed the ending. What happens after Kate throws Millie's letter onto the fire? What happens in the end? Does Kate and Merton stay together? If somebody could answer this question pretty quickly that would be great... why do i always leave things to the last minute?!
This may be too late, but here goes: in the end, Kate and Merton try having sex, but neither can complete the deed. Kate rolls off of him and says, "Just tell me you aren't in love with her memory". Merton says nothing. Kate gets up, gets dressed and leaves. So the irony of the whole film is that after everything they planned and sacraficed to be together, they ended up driven apart.
"So I got that going for me, which is nice."- Carl Spackler, "Caddyshack"
...and that is the most crucial moment in the movie... When he realizes that he truly loves Millie and misses her terribly. Very touching and beautiful. You should see this movie again. 10/10.
