Simple. The Star Wars Episode 1 trailer came out before this movie. Thousands of Star Wars fans went to see the trailer then got up and walked out, and some even paid to do that multiple times.

I love it too, but it is a fact...

Read what i wrote. The First time the Star Wars Ep 1 trailer was shown was before The Waterboy. Therefore, a large number of Star Wars fans paid to go and see the Waterboy, but got up and left after the Star Wars ad had played. They didnt bother with watching the film.

I heard that happened, but I seriously doubt that THOUSANDS of people paid to just see the trailer and walked out. Fans or not, not too many would waste money like that.

No matter when this is shown I have to watch it so it is one of my favorite movies to watch! LOL It always cracks me up watching it especially when he gets angry with the professor and then tackles the professor. LOL

I really think this was a quiet breakthrough film for Sandler and represents a point where he broke through from his normal fan base to a more general appeal.

This is the only Adam Sandler movie I like but I really like this movie. The humor is silly and juvenile but it all works because the setting is this bizarre Pee Wee Herman-ish world. There is a child like innocence to the film and I think that is what makes the low brow humor work.

In fact, the movie would have been that much better had Paul Ruben played the lead.

LOL, great insight there, kodax2.

While i have no opinion but the lowest regarding the character of Paul Rubens, he can be pretty funny when the role is right, as in his portrayal of Spleen in the 1998 film 'Mystery Men'.

Only a true star wars dork would pay to see the previews of that awful movie and then walk out. Weren't there internet trailers back then? What a waste of time and money.

I wish there were stats on how many Star Wars fans there were that did that. I'm a huge Trek fan but I would never pay 10 bucks to see a trailer.

Liek the person said earlier - just because it makes a lot of money doesnt mean it is a good film

In my opinion, without the 3D - Avatar would just be your usual say.. 500, maybe 600million grossing movie (i know its a lot of money, but you know what i mean). It would eb up there as a big money maker, but certainly no where near the top 10. How it generated so much money is beyond me. The story is quite average in my opinion.. /end of my whinge!

As for waterboy tho i would say it is a good film. And i doubt the star wars trailer had much to do with it. Also.. i dont think you can really call waterboy a 'sport' film either lets face it,, its more about otehr things such as friend ship, love, family etc than it is about sport..

Unfortunately, this fact is no longer true. As it turns out, "The Blind Side" now holds this title...pushing "The Waterboy" to the number two spot. While I enjoyed "The Blind Side", nothing compares to Bobby Boucher openin' up a can of whoop-ass...he would've tackled that Blind Side guy Captain Insano style!!!
