it has to do when boby's fatehr abandoned them.. something of like a curse.. orsomething she says because of superstition since she says everything is the devil...

I just wondered what exactly the "pick up sticks" part meant- if anyone's heard that saying before.

I'm almost positive that was just improvised on her part for comedic effect and it has no real meaning.

I remember as a kid playing pickup sticks but it might mean something else in the movie though.

Yeah, Specter19 got it right...it has something to do with superstition. Since Mama had already said two sixes (in 1966), she didn't want to risk saying another six right after that by accident - 'cuz then it would've been 666, the number of the beast. And we all know how Mama feels about the devil (aka Dick Clark aka Benjamin Franklin)!!!
