Sandler's Performance
I didn't get it. What was he trying to do? I get he was a little bit special needs, but the performance was terrible, in fact all the performances were terrible, the script was hideous too. What was up with his accent?

shareWatch Forrest Gump, then watch The Waterboy again. I think that may help you out.
shareWas it a parody of Forrest Gump? He didn't really pull it off. If it wasn't a parody then he really sucked.
shareIt was loosely based on characters that Adam Sandler did in his comedy CD's and SNL. It wasn't a parody and trust me just take it a face value as one of the crazy/angry guy movies of the 90's when that's all that seemed to be coming out in theaters.

Yeah, nothing says early 90s like 1998.
I think it was a Cajun accent.
shareYou're a complete *beep* idiot. Typical British twat.
This is the best performance I've ever seen from Sandler. Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are funny movies, but the leads are pretty much interchangeable. Same character, different name.
In The Waterboy, he completely commits to this character. He doesn't rely on the usual theatrics, but just stays in character and plays off the supporting cast.
He's not stupid. _You're_ stupid and clearly missed the point of the movie if that's what you took away from it. He has a speech impediment and he was poorly educated because he's been sheltered by "Momma," locked away from the world. Our first clue as to his intelligence is when he tells Winkler, "it is imperative that you allow me to be your waterboy." Then he scored a 96 on the exam he needed to pass in order to be eligible for the bowl game.
He's not stupid, and that's the point.
He's Mike Tyson, he's not Forrest Gump.
This was an excellent script, too. The part where "Momma" Bates explains that after Bobby's father walked out, she was afraid he'd abandon her too one day, which is why she kept the rest of the world hidden from him, was terrific. There's actually a point to all of this, in addition to the comedy you don't appreciate because you're probably a slimy British wanker *beep* who has no business watching our TV shows/movies in the first place, as you pissants don't understand or know a thing about our culture and how the comedy is relevant to it.

I agree too. Funny that he stalked you from the Idiocracy board, that's one of my favorite movies and another film which is taken at first glance to be a stupid comedy but actually has far deeper layers to it which make it a movie which stands the test of time.
