Piano and Copyright

Can anyone say what piano was used for this film set in the 1850's? Also, was it necessary to acquire copyright clearance from The Heiress to produce this film? RSVP!!

I can't help you with your question about the piano, but The Heiress is based on a novel by Henry James, called Washington Square, published in 1880. Unless James' heirs renewed a copyright on his works (doubtful), it was and still is in the pubic domain so no copyright clearance was necessary.

I understand that the James novel is no longer under copyright but The Heiress is. I would imagine that ANY Heiress reference made in this film would require Heiress permissions. I attempted to get permission from Heiress copyright holder for a novel I am writing that DID use Heiress associations. I was refused. So, I am rewriting to remove all Heiress associations. I also cannot use the Pleyel spinet piano referenced in The Heiress. So I must use a different piano and it must be 1850's compatible. Ditto Duncan Phyfe furniture which I must revise for my novel.

I don't understand what you're wanting.

The name of this remake is Washington Square, which was based off of the Henry James novel. The film The Heiress was also based on the novel Washington Square.

Why not base your novel off of the original James novel, which is in the public domain, and avoid the film The Heiress entire?

Why specify the make of the piano or the furniture?

You're welcome, BTW.
