I think it was appalling they had to explain not only the distinction between lava and magma, but also what they are individually (molten rock).

Hey impropriety, even though you, me and some others knows the difference between lava and magma doesn't mean EVERYONE knows this. I'm willing to bet there's plenty of stuff that to you don't know anything about, even though millions of others consider it "basic knowledge".
