Voight's dog?

There was something that confused me in the last scene with John Voight's Native American Vietnam vet charcater. Bobby and he are sitting in his residence. At the end of the scene, Voight's character calls to his dog to take him for a walk and his dog hops up to follow him. The wierd thing is, when he meets Bobby he tells Bobby his dog has been dead for a while(naturally only after Bobby's felt it). All indications are that he's telling the truth. Did he get a new dog? Was there some kind of miracle? Did Bobby imagine it?

The dog was not dead, only sleeping, just as Mr. Voight was not blind, as he said in the movie "things are not always what they seem" .....
