Yeah, it's kind of Stone making fun of himself - he often has the 'wise indigenous person' in his movies (NBK, Doors, etc.) who questions the motives of selfish humans - here, it's played for comic effect. And yet, at the end, he's been speaking pretty much predictions of the truth.
My fave is when he stumbles off, muttering "You think you'll live that long?"
