Biggest promlem - this show would be cancelled after few years. No way it would run for 30 years.

This was always my biggest issue with this movie. No way that for 30 years people would tune every day to see "what is Truman doing" considering he literally doesn't do anything. As he lives in a small town and has very boring mundane personality. He wakes up, goes to work, does nothing, comes home and goes sleep. That’s his daily routine.

Movie came out when it was this trend with reality shows showing real people. And then it died down in few years and now no one watches them. Kardashians work so hard to have people interested in their reality show, constantly creating fake dramas. And still their show has like 1 millions viewers. With 340 millions living in USA.

This Truman show would be cancelled after few years. It mast have enormous budget. For it to work, paying extras. But movie had to ignore it. So i guess we just have to close our eyes to it.

Survivor has been on the air 23 years.

reply

Survivor is still on? I admit I have not watched regular TV in years. Rather watch stuff with no ads.

reply

Hype died down long time ago. Not many people watch it. And certainly not whole world.

And its new contestants every year with their problems. While Truman is the same boring person and nothing happens in his life at all.

reply

Look at how many tune in to the Kardashians.

reply

Its 1 million. Thatsh their real ratings. Lower then CW shows. And USA has population of 330 millions. That very very low.

It’s on Wednesdays at Prime Time. After two decades. Shows that “not many” Watch don’t get a weekday 8pm slot.

Sure, the mega-hit days are over, but it’s still a draw.

Well, like most high-concept movies, a high suspension of disbelief is required. It's an exaggeration of the real world, although it also predicted the rise of 'Reality TV'.

Still, the implication was that the show ran wall-to-wall ads, at the bottom of the screen, and that it was generating large revenue by having various companies feature their brands across the show, and have various people effectively advertise them straight-to-the-camera during Truman's day-to-day activities.

For a more 'realistic' take on Reality TV, I'd suggest watching the same year's Ed TV. I wouldn't say it's as good a film as The Truman Show, but it's better than its reputation suggests and it didn't deserve to be entirely overshdowed by this admittedly brilliant and seminal movie.

I think you missed the point of the movie.

reply

Tardassians has been on for like 20 years.

reply

And they constantly create new fake drama to keep people interested on their life. And there is like 10 of them. While Truman is alone and does nothing.

And I saw ratings of that show. Despite all the hype it has average of 1 millions of viewers. Not many people actually watch it.

reply

I thought people were tuning in to see if he'd figure out that he was trapped on a tv show, and whether he'd get out.

reply

Not at first.

He was adopted as a baby and grew to adulthood with no idea that he was on a TV show. They even discuss on the show that people; "accept the reality that they are presented".

It was only in the last few days before he escaped he started questioning his surroundings.

reply

It shouldn't have taken him so long to figure out he couldn't leave the island.

reply

I think they staged that his father died drowning while on the yacht. While Truman was a child. And that forced Truman to have trauma and he was afraid of water.

reply

Some people are born with a natural curiosity, and many teens have an urge to rebel. Truman had a total lack of curiosity. It was finally love that led him to escape.
