Would Cristof have gone to jail
If Truman died when he swamped the boat? Seems like he would have.

sharePerhaps, but it also seems there is a different set of rules in the world where this movie takes place.
Early in the movie, we're told Truman was an abandoned infant who was "purchased" by the production company. By our understanding, that would make him an unwitting slave.
If he had died in the storm, the production company, if they own him, could just consider his death as a loss of "property", albeit a very valuable one, at that.
The movie also makes clear that there are many people in that world who are vehemently opposed to the situation Truman is in, and if he were to die would consider Cristof his murderer.
He wasn't Purchased. He was legally adopted by the corporation. Legally, this means they were within their rights to put him on the show and franchise his image(though that should have been challenged when he turned 18), but they can't legally kill him.
shareMaybe, maybe not. But once Truman got out he would have one hell of a lawsuit against them.
shareHE WOULD HAVE HAD THE TIME OF HIS LIFE.
