So Steve Carrell is Oscar-worthy, but Jim Carrey is just a comedy actor?
This doesn't make sense to me. Screw the Academy.

shareYeah, Carrey was Oscar-worthy in The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In fact, he got Oscar buzz for all three films, and won the Golden Globe for Truman and Moon, and was nominated for Eternal Sunshine. But the Academy still stiffed him, inexplicably. I can only imagine how he felt when he saw his former In Living Color castmate Jamie Foxx win the Oscar for Ray on the same year that Carrey was snubbed for Eternal Sunshine, perhaps his most lauded performance yet.
shareBecause Steve Carrell is jewish and Jim Carrey is not.
Simple as that.

I think your data is incorrect. According to Wikipedia, "Carell was raised Roman Catholic". But even if he were, it would be irrelevant. I don't think name calling and bashing others helps in any kind of situations.
shareIn fairness, Prison Mike is a pretty realistic performance!!
"What are you, some kind of doomsday machine, boy?"
I assume you're referring to this movie specifically and not Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for example. I think it has to do with the fact that Jim Carrey did this film at the height of his popularity, and while he did get to show his dramatic chops, he also does a lot of the "Jim Carrey"-isms he did in films like Ace Ventura and The Mask. By the time Steve Carell did Foxcatcher he'd already done more dramatic parts, and thus in the public's view it wasn't such a drastic departure for him. And his comedic acting (what I've seen of it anyway) was always different from Carrey's. Carrey was more like a walking cartoon with all the wacky voices, facial expressions and movements while Carell was more like an everyday schmuck doing more deadpan. It's possible that due to the things he'd made his name on and his popularity at the time, Carrey was seen as just a clown, and not taken seriously as a dramatic actor.
