dropped alternate ending

just watched this movie again today after about 6-7 years, naturally after i was done i came here and saw this thread on the trivia page *spoiler alert*

"The original script was darker and had crucial differences from the shooting draft. The city was not a utopian society but there were staged criminal incidents. Truman had a drinking problem. It is stated clearly that Truman makes love to his wife (whose real name is Hannah). Christoff's intention was for Truman to have Meryl impregnated and the child would carry on the show. There were more clues that help Truman realize the truth. The scene where Truman confronts Meryl was far more aggressive. Finally and most importantly after Truman passes the door he meets Christoff and the main cast members on a rooftop while in the film the story ends with Truman's exit from the fake world. In the encounter at the rooftop which was in the script the actors stare at him sheepishly but Truman in his rage attacks Christoff and tries to strangle him but the rest of the actors hold him back. He is finally reunited with Sylvia."

to be honest, i liked the movie the way it was, the only thing thats missing is the truman an christoff encounter at the end that couldve made the movie's ending way better in my opinion.

what do you guys think?

it would be cool to see the darker version, who knows, maybe they will but not likely because to me it seems like one of those classic movies that wont be altered and if they ever will people wont like it.

this is great though, the only thing thats missing is the truman\christoff showdown at the end.

The ending was perfect. Going out on that note was a positive at peace message that he had accepted his past and moving on to better things.

The rest is left to our imagination. Way too many films use the old clichéd bad guy getting a punch at the end. You could see by Christoph's reaction that he got his punishment. So no need to see anything more.

Good points, especially when it comes to clichéd endings.

Maybe the film could've used more of an edge here and there, however they didn't need to hit us over the head with that in order to make the point that this story was twisted (the part about raising a person in a fake world just for a TV show).

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

i wanted it to be funny

Making the town non-ideal seems like an interesting idea. A more aggressive Truman/Meryl confrontation scene could have been interesting. However, the other stuff sounds horrible. Truman attacking Christoff in a rage? Reuniting with Sylvia? I much prefer the current ending. Seeing Truman disappear through the door and the camera lingering on it for a few seconds is a very beautiful scene. The original idea sounds like any generic crappy movie.

I think the real story begins when he walks out that door !!!!! could you imagine how screwed up his head is going to be in the real world .

i always wished there was a sequel

For those wanting a darker version there'a always the Philip K. Dick novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Out_of_Joint which is basically a similar but more twisted simulated reality story and an influence on the film.

Suprise! Nothing to see here

What would be the purpose of having a fake world if it is just like the real one? But then what is the point of having a perfect world? I guess a TV show is meant for escapism from the real world and The Truman Show gave viewers something they dont have, a perfect world.

This is an interesting point. What is the purpose of The Truman Show?
What's the point of placing someone in an idealized world, unaware? Why not just a straight forward fiction narrative, what does the Truman element really add if there is no conflict?

reply

Truman is shown drinking though, his 'friend's' solution to every crisis involves turning up with cans of beer.
