Yankees are playing the Red Sox in New York on a sunday afternoon in August:

You will see guys dressed up in Yankees uniforms, wearing mits, keeping their own box score at Yankee stadium (Yankee convention center). They are playing fantasy baseball (D&D for jocks). If not at Yankee stadium they meet at bars (conventions where only Enterprise cast members are appearing) to watch the games and celebrate them together, again dressed in Yankees hats, shirts and even uniforms. The Yankees greats are revered and anyone who is lucky enough to have met A.Rod, Jeter or a former great is accorded a place of honor. Some guy with a Yankees tattoo will show it off with pride. The players themselves are treated as hero's and legends. Both have their greats: Babe Ruth (Shatner), Mickey Mantle (Stewart) and Derek Jeter (Pine). People travel to Florida for Spring Training and around America to see them play (go see a really big convention in LA)..... and if any of those Red Sox (Star Wars/Lord of the Rings) fans show up talking about how great they are and their pantheon of players (Star Wars/ Lord of the Rings cast) are there's trouble.

Good thing baseball is cool.

both hardcore sports fans and trekkies are insane, though I also hate the fact that one is mocked and one is tolerated or even condoned in some places.

Get rid of bullying in the USA, picking on and humiliating people who are different. It's ALL over the board here.

People who are different? I'm not saying anybody deserves to be bullied, but when you put on a uniform and wear it in public, you're making a conscious decision to be different. That is something quite different than a person who's bullied for their race, religion, or sexual orientation. Those are the people who didn't make that conscious decision to be different and can't help the way they are or look. When you walk around in public wearing a uniform, you're going to get a certain amount of stares and ridicule from people. That's just a fact. That's kind of like one of those punk rockers who decides he wants to have this freaky green hair so he can be different, and then gets mad and complains when people look at him differently.

Oh yes, of course, because if you are different enough to have green hair, you DESERVE to be made fun of, mocked, told to go to therapy, and be humiliated in public even if you aren't hurting yourself or others. That's the law, isn't it?

My point was, there is a major difference between somebody that makes a choice to look different as opposed to somebody that can't help how they are. I think it's wrong to put the 2 in the same category. Everybody has a choice as to how they dress and behave in public. I hate to see anybody get bullied. But no matter how many commercials or campaigns there are against it, people can be mean. Especially kids. Sorry if you've had a rough time of things yourself. I don't know what the solution is.

To be fair, baseball is cool, but it wouldn't be too cool to walk around the supermarket or running daily errands wearing full red sox uniform, socks and all. I don't think anybody takes issue with trek fans wearing uniforms at conventions. There's nothing wrong with that.

It's all just people playing "pretend" - from the grown man in the hockey jersey to the grown man in the Starfleet uniform. Both will claim to just be fans, and hopefully no one takes it any more serious than that. If that lady in Little Rock really believes she is the captain of a star ship she has mental problems, same as a guy in a football uniform that believes he really plays for the Kansas City Chiefs.

There is a movie about Football obsessed nuts in England - anything obsessive is probably unhealthy but who am I to say? Trekkies know the risks of going out in public with Klingon makeup on. If they do it anyway good for them. Live and let live.

I get far more annoyed at Trek fans who obsess about every little flaw in the shows. To hear some of them you'd think they hate the very thing they obsess about. But again, if you're having fun, the pros outweigh the cons, so be it. I thought Trekkies was funny because it showcased obsessive fans, which is entertaining. The wrong conclusion to make would be that all Trek fans are like that, but people do that all the time anyway - southern people, minorities, religious people, etc.

I wouldn't worry about hard core Trekkies, they're tough. They can take it, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

The point is, the original poster is posting under the premise that people that wear a uniform at a convention are being ridiculed. Nobody is ridiculing anybody for wearing a uniform at a convention. So the comparison to some overzealous baseball fans is completely bogus in my opinion. It's the people you mention like the person that believes she's the captain of a starship and wearing uniforms in every day life is what people ridicule. You make a very good point about fans that dress like a Klingon and know the risks but do it anyways. Good for them. They don't care what people think. And if they can't handle the ridicule that comes along with that, they shouldn't do it. That goes back to my original point where that guy spazzed out and had a hissy fit about people who are different and are helpless victims. They make the choice to dress up in public. The point of the movie is to show the most obsessive fans. Not to show that star trek fans are normal after all. That wouldn't make for a very entertaining movie and there'd be no purpose in that
