James Cameron Says Leonardo DiCaprio Nearly Lost Titanic Role Over His Attitude in Audition

Leonardo DiCaprio came close to never playing his arguably most famous and iconic character when he somewhat butted heads with James Cameron during the audition process for Titanic.

In a video career retrospective for GQ published Tuesday, the Oscar-winning filmmaker spent a good portion of time talking about his 1997 historical drama epic, which for a span of years was the top-grossing film of all time.

Beyond his initial consideration of rebuilding the entire doomed ship (which launched in 1911 and sank on April 15, 1912), and his liking for Gwyneth Paltrow in the role of Rose before he met Kate Winslet, Cameron spilled on casting DiCaprio as Jack, which almost fell apart over the actor's poor attitude during auditions.

"There was a meeting with Leo and then there was a screen test with Leo," Cameron said, setting the scene. "The meeting was funny because I am sitting in my conference room, waiting to meet an actor. And I look around, and all the women in the entire office are in the meeting. They all wanted to meet Leo. It was hysterical."

The filmmaker said the first meeting went well and DiCaprio "charmed everybody" so he was asked back for a read with Winslet, who had already been cast. It did not go as smoothly. At least, not at first.

"So he came back a couple of days later, and I had the camera set up to record the video," Cameron recalled. "He didn't know he was going to test. He thought it was another meeting to meet Kate. So I said, 'Okay, we'll just go in the next room, and we'll run some lines and I'll video it.' And he said, 'You mean, I'm reading?' I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Oh, I don't read.' I shook his hand and said, 'Thanks for coming by.' And he said, 'Wait, wait, wait. If I don't read, I don't get the part? Just like that?' And I said, 'Oh, yeah. Come on. This is a giant movie that is going to take two years of my life, and you'll be gone doing five other things while I'm doing post-production. So, I'm not going to f--- it up by making the wrong decision in casting. So, you're going to read, or you're not going to get the part.'"

DiCaprio reluctantly agreed to read and was indignant until the camera was rolling, Cameron claimed.

"So he comes in, and he's like every ounce of his entire being is just so negative — right up until I said, 'Action.' Then he turned into Jack," the director explained. "Kate just lit up, and they played the scene. Dark clouds had opened up, and a ray of sun came down and lit up Jack. I'm like, 'All right. He's the guy.'"

Turns out the guy who kicked Wilson's ass wasn't even part of DeCaprio's "posse". Sounds to me like Roger Wilson acted like he did in Porky's and was looking for trouble.

In any case, the suit against DeCaprio was dismissed by a judge.

that is decrapio's multi million dollars PR firm at work. his butt boy was his friend.

this is eyewitness account i find from googles search

the next day, Ferguson got Berkley’s phone number from Tenzer and began calling her at home. He left several messages inviting Berkley to join them for dinner that night. When Berkley ignored the messages, one of Tenzer’s assistants called and said that the talent agent needed to speak with her. When Berkley called Tenzer, she asked Berkley to reconsider Ferguson’s invitations. According to Berkley:

The first thing Karen said was, ‘Why didn’t you call Jay back? She said, ‘Your presence is requested here.’ Her tone was very impatient. And I said, ‘What, are you trying to deliver me to these guys, Karen?’ And she said, ‘Well, you know.’

When Berkley told Wilson what was going on, he decided to intervene. He went down to Asia de Cuba where DiCaprio and his friends were having dinner. DiCaprio had a posse of about a dozen people including Ferguson, Tenzer, Gabriel Byrne and Julia Ormand. When Wilson arrived at the table, Ferguson jumped up and asked Wilson to step outside. Wilson accepted and the two of them vacated the restaurant.

According to testimony from the restaurant’s chief of security, DiCaprio said to the rest of the table, “Let’s go kick his ass.” And everyone except Byrne and Ormand followed him to the front of the restaurant where a fight was brewing. DiCaprio was flanked by security while his friends taunted Wilson. Tenzer was trying too late to make the peace.

One of DiCaprio’s friends, Todd Healy, punched Wilson in the Adam’s apple. Wilson doubled over. Wilson’s larynx was damaged. He filed a $45 million dollar lawsuit against three of the men involved including DiCaprio who Wilson claimed incited the violence.

girly man is guilty as sin hiding behind his butt boys

I think, after it was settled that Kate had the role, she was the one who wanted Leo - “she just lit up”. Otherwise it would have been Matthew McConaughey who was really Jack. I never got the impression that DiCaprio ever liked this role.

“Leonardo DiCaprio's role in Titanic made him a household name but that doesn't mean that the star is exactly proud of his work. DiCaprio … said that he was embarrassed about his performance in the movie and called himself a ‘little punk.’”

And the debate about the door.
The question of whether Jack could have fit on the door alongside Rose has waged countless debates in the decades since the Oscar-winning blockbuster's release. DiCaprio himself even weighed in on the internet controversy…promoting Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, telling MTV News, "No comment," with a laugh. Brad Pitt says he would have shared the 'Titanic' door with Leonardo DiCaprio.

If only Rose could have just moved over.

i really don't blame him. titanic is one of leo's weakest performances. he's very soap opera-y in the film. leo is openly one of those actors who relies on good direction and Cameran has never been good at directing actors. his one or two exceptions are sig weaver in aliens and michael biehn in the abyss.

reply

I think Abyss is one of Cameron’s best.

I looked up the Jacks. And it looks like Cameron wanted River Phoenix first. Billy Crudup was mentioned. I think River Phoenix would have made a huge difference. The script was really really bad. Johnny Depp couldn’t get through it. Probably bc Depp is a great writer.

Titanic was great except for the weak love story, the poor script, and the bad casting.

Damn that is some 'tude to have at the director of Terminator and Aliens. Maybe JC would've been better going with Gwyneth as Rose (actual American/no fake accent, snooty/privileged for real) and someone more appreciative as Jack (less of a boyish girly man looking guy - MM?) but then without Leo the movie might not have made over 2b

reply

There was really no one in the cast that was necessary to make this movie work, Leo included - the subject and production itself virtually guaranteed this would be a monumental film. In fact, I thought the guy who played Cal was probably the best cast. What I mean is that literally anyone in the cast could have been swapped out and the film is just as good (or bad, depending where you are on this).

I always thought DeCaprio just looked too boyish to have traveled the world living by his wits. Don't get me wrong, he was fine in Titanic, but certainly not irreplaceable.

DeCaprio did the right thing by sucking it up and doing the read for Cameron
