He'd never have been smart enough to use someone else's kid to get a place on a lifeboat!
The supposition is that he would have done everything else the same if he wasn't with Rose, and ended up on that wall section alone instead of Rose. Of course, those that advance this theory forget that without Rose, Jack would have been hanging with Fabrizio and Charlie right to the end, so he likely would have (gallantly) given up his spot on the floating wall section and died anyway.

He was far below deck and crew members were only allowing women and children in the boats first. Since 1st class people were on top deck and easier to access, they happen to get first dibs.
He was extremely unlikely to survive. He was a man, poor and chivalrous so he would have gotten other people in the boats in his place.
