How did the fake FBI agent know?

Just watched the film. What I could not figure out is how did the fake FBI agent know that the plane had crashed near there in the first place?

Also, if he had a hunch that the plane was near there , why go to the police to help find it? It was only a bit of luck that the police officer remembered that the brothers mentioned a plane and therefore able to find it. Going near the police pretending to be FBI should have been the last thing he would have done.

The fake FBI didn't know the plane was there. He went to every small town to look for the plane, as he figured that a plane crash in a city or big town would obviously have been located and reported.

The novel explains that he spent a long time visiting a *LOT* of small towns between where the plane took off and where it was expected to land. There are no discrepancies in the story - again, if you look at the original novel.

Thank you. I guess reading the book would help explain a few things. It must have been a bit of luck that he managed to speak to the police chief who had just happened to have spoken to the men and had them blurt out about the plane.
