Yes, it was absurd, and added into the film screenplay no doubt to try and tie up the ending after some huge changes. In the book, Jacob is shot by Hank at the house with Lou/Nancy/Sonny (also not in the film). His character by this point is so obsessed with protecting his family and not being caught, that he shoots his brother. In coming to terms with that, he also murders a few more people with ease.
The film tried to make his character more likeable and sympathetic, which changed the story (and point of the story) completely in favour of a crowd-pleasing thriller. But in doing so, had the added scene where Jacob asks to be shot. Totally dumb.
I like this movie and always have. But I have to admit that I found it odd that he would just shoot his brother like that. Reading your post sheds a bit more light on the matter. I haven't read the book, but it sounds like Hank was a bit more of a bad guy than he was in the film. In the movie he just seemed to be more of a 'good guy' type than he was in the book. Hank shooting Jacob seemed more like a mercy killing in the film.

I agree. Shooting his brother made absolutely no sense at that point. I was frying my brain trying to figure out why. Thanks for clearing up the plot point that that he was already dead. How annoying.

I didn't find this unbelievable at all. There's plenty of lead up to the idea that Jacob cannot take the pressure of the murders, and maintaining an untrue story, so the fact that he's suicidal is no surprise at all. But he is still willing to protect his brother who has a wife and child to think of, so offers them both an easier way out.

True, they did share info and never suspected Hank, but he didn't know that. His paranoia was in overdrive. Could I shoot my brother? Hell no. I think 99% of people would say they couldn't in that case. But maybe that's what they were trying to convey? That he was so obsessed with not getting caught and protecting his family, he did an act no one else could do. He only had seconds to decide. I don't think it's realistic, but it's possible. I didn't like it, but it didn't ruin the movie for me.

Two things: (1.) Jacob wanted to die for several reasons and (2.) it was in Hank's best interest to give him what he wanted. After all, Jacob would never be able to keep his story straight or keep from talking at a bar. He was a screw-up. The ending is similar to "Of Mice and Men."
