Gas Station
The Gas Station is located at the corner of Stassney and 1st Street in Austin TX.
Early one evening I arose from the floor still smelling of death and breakfast.

u've been there?
That's great. U know it's so cool when u can visit places and stand there and think: they shot it HERE.
Is it very much like the movie? I mean, can you get on the roof via the dumpster?
*It happens sometimes. Friends come in and out of our lives like busboys in a restaurant.*
I live in Austin but I never knew SubUrbia was filmed here until reading this topic . SO yesterday my cousins and I went down there. It's changed a bit since the filming- the bakery is now an AA meeting place (of all things) there is no dumpster by the store but there is one at the edge of the lot. the wooded area that "the van" sat at is now fenced of with barb wire and it appears as if no one has mowed it since the filming. the laundry mat is still attached to the gas station and is still in operation. My cousins and I stayed there for about an hour just sitting and talking about the movie and figuring out where certain scenes were shot yada, yada, yada anyway If any of you are ever in austin you should check it out! Peace!
shareThat is so cool philosphicall984. I wish I knew people who did things like that.
I always thought it'd be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody.

It would be awesome to hang out at a gas station with friends. If I tried this here in L.A. I would constantly get harrassed by cops. If I was drinking or even buzzed I would certainly go to the slammer. SoCal sucks.
Are authorities more relaxed in Texas? is it worth moving? I know at the beginning of the film Tim hides his booze as the cops drive by. But they are drinking continously throughout the movie. Another movie I like is "Varsity Blues" when Mox sits in front of the liqour store drinking a six pack. Both movies take place in Texas.
Dont take away my paradise by saying this is only in movies.

I dont hold grudges and I am pissed that after all these years you still think I do! - F.S.
I didn't know that Burnsfield was a real place, i just thought that it was something that Eric Bogosian made up.

The movie mostly took place in Austin Texas. I dont think Burnfied does exist. Even if it does I think I rather go to Austin.

I reject your reality and substitute it with my own.
The movie may have been filmed in Austin Texas (i assume that's what you mean), but it still takes place in a fictional town called Burnfield, which could be anywhere in the United States.

Im aware I have read the book. So to keep up with the poster, if you want to see anything from the movie you would have to go to Austin. But then according to Bogosian, Burnfield is just a symbolic name for your hometown, my hometown, wherever. He has my little hometown (Simi Valley, Ca.), and my life at this stage down to a tee.

F-the pope! One half of the world is starving to death and the other is hooked up to their VCR cathode ray tubes absorbing nonstop porno and violence, sucking down high cholesterol food-fat, getting larger and larger and larger like a bunch of christmas geese ultimately bursting with cancer and bad Karma.

I live in Texas and I can tell you it sucks. There are no mountains, the beaches are nasty and trees aren’t very bountiful. It floods every time it rains and the summers are so hot most people stay indoors and only venture outside out of necessity or sheer boredom.
Texas has the highest alcohol-related fatal traffic crashes in the U.S., so yes authorities are more relaxed. There are a lot of country roads where there are no police and sobriety check points are nonexistent.
Austin had a boom in the economy when Dell came here, but about four years ago they did a lot of downsizing and suddenly Austin was overcrowded with unemployed people. Now the city thrives on its alcohol sales. A lot of policy put into effect in Austin is ultimately decided by the bar owners of 6th street who call themselves "Friends of 6th St."
So, yes things are lax in Texas, but you can only buy beer and wine in the grocery store. You have to go to a special store to buy liquor. Also in Texas there are a lot of "dry" counties where you can't buy any alcohol of any kind. It's not illegal to drink it, you just can't buy it. Some people will drive hundreds of miles and even into other states just to buy a six-pack of beer.

Corpus and South Padre aren't that nasty... and there are an assload of trees in the suburb I live in. I also used to live in Huntsville, which has beatiful trees. After that, I lived in the middle of a national forest over here.
PS
Are there states where you can buy liquor in a grocery store?
You know, for kids.
The thing is, when I read this post... I thought about how so many people can relate to this movie. The first thought that came into my mind was that The Gas Station is located in the little shopping center outside my neighborhood... it is a gas station that my friends and I hang out at.
shareSorry to drudge up this old topic, but the Gas Station is also "down the street" from my old junior high school where they filmed scenes for DAZED AND CONFUSED. About 5 minutes away or so (1st and William Cannon).
