I like both very good, underappreciated movies a lot, though for different reasons. I might have a very slight preference for _Buffalo Soldiers_ just because it reflects my own (peacetime) Army experience somewhat more, and strikes me as more true to life (though it also has its surreal moments).
As that movie spells out explicitly with a Nietzsche quote, military organizations tend to go to pot in times of peace. It's really better when you've got some kind of war going on. It keeps everybody a little sharper and weeds out some of the bad elements.

And I stood where I did be; for there was no more use to run; And again I lookt with my hope gone.
I can definitely relate. I served most of my enlistment in the 1990s and got out right after 9/11.
Buffalo Soldiers and Three Kings are two of my favorite military movies, not because they were real to life, but because they got the tone of the 1990s military right -- The dysfunction, malaise, sarcasm, unclear purpose, etc.
Buffalo Soldiers by a bit....
shareI like both, but i prefer Three Kings...
