A Hard Day's Night ripoff with a Girl Group

Okay, I don't HATE this movie, however I'm not sure why they decided to make "A Hard Day's Night" ripoff. I understand that the Spice Girls were huge at the time, but all their talent together didn't match even Ringo's drumstick. A Hard Day's Night is a classic film and this film pretty much copies it in every way-manager sparring with the Girls, harried situations, screaming fans, biting wit (Lennon vs. Posh) and a concert to get to at the end. Yup it's all there.

It was kind of like that movie. Except, I found Spice World to be better (yes I said it).

"Spice World is obviously intended as a ripoff of A Hard Day's Night which gave The Beatles to the movies...the huge difference, of course, is that the Beatles were talented--while, let's face it, the Spice Girls could be duplicated by any five women under the age of 30 standing in line at Dunkin' Donuts."

You found a movie with bad acting and an insipid storyline and rotten music to be better than a movie with good acting, an interesting storyline, and good music. Maybe it's just that you were only watching it to ogle The Spice Girls. Spice World was trash.

I don't think that a Hard Day's Night has an interesting storyline and good acting. It was boring and they were always trying to be funny and they were not.
In my opinion Spice World is better. It hasn't a good storyline either, but it was fresh and fun to watch.

I love The Beatles and they were way supreme musically but they weren't actors and I didn't find their acting interesing. Spice World wasn't exactly great and the Girls also aren't actors but it was fun and cute.

Yes, I agree with you. Spice World is better. :)

Years ago (2002 ish) I started a thread on the Hard days Night Board wondering why Spiceworld was 2.9/10 and Hard Days Night 8/10. This thread turned into one of those 60 page epics full of rants and stayed on the front page for 5 years.

Since The Beatles are still popular, and Spice Girls aren't then Spiceworld is going to appear to be a lesser film even though they are basically the same.

I quite like both films regardless of quality simply because they can both be viewed as a neat little time capsule of the times they were made.

reply

Maybe people judge it harder because it is such a blatant ripoff.
I still find it baffling that the media at the time seemed happy to go along with this manufactured group being pushed/promoted as if they were a new Beatles.

A Hard Day's Night is so good. I'm a huge Beatles fan so that's probably why I like it so much. Thought it was interesting, quite funny, and of course the music is great. Even Help! is quite good.

Just got done with Spice World. Can't really connect with anything. It's actually pretty cringe worthy. I was only watching because Emma Bunton is hot, anyways.

I have to agree with emallen. It is like A Hard Day's Night except with the Spice Girls. I enjoyed both films, but Spice World was just a case of the girls having fun. The boys, meanwhile, actually proved they can act a little as well. A Hard Day's Night had more of a plot to it than Spice World.

However, I must say a lot of people say Spice World was terrible. While IMO, yes I thought it was bad, it did have some good moments, and it also proved that just like the Beatles; the Spice Girls were very close.

I kind of think it was the idea to make it into a rip-off of "A Hard Day's Night".
Maybe that's why it was so criticised, we already have one "A Hard Day's Night". There wasn't room for another one.

Al tough, I think some of the criticism is unfair. Yes it is a silly film and a weak plot, but that's the whole idea of the film.
The film-makers and the girls themselves are well aware that the film is bad, so they play it up even more intentionally.
