Is the director's cut better than the theatrical release

Nah, they are virtually the same. I made the mistake of paying full price for the VHS in 1998 thinking they would be different.

I think the only difference is a few extra shots of violence here and there.

Ex. when Simmons is killed near the beginning, there is about an extra 10 seconds of shots of his body engulfed in flame before the explosion.

Or in the opening mission, when Simmons wipes out the room of people before destroying the plane, there is a few extra shots of the guards (or whatever they were) being shot, with a little bit more blood than in the PG-13 cut.

The differences between the Theatrical and Director's Cut.

To be honest it really doesn't add much.

I do, for one. He's said it multiples time in interviews regarding the film, and if you read the original version of the screenplay, it was quite graphic enough to garner such a rating.

It makes realistic sense as well, considering that almost all popular superhero/comic book movies have been either PG or PG-13. R-Rated movies of the genre never really sprung into popularity 'Sin City' in 2005.(the first 'Blade' movie may have been R as well, I can't honestly remember at the moment).

Tad more violence, and a lot more swearing. Their dialogue doesn't make them sound like gay bitches like it did in the pg-13 version. Well... Not as bad anyway...
