What worked?

The make up and physical effects. Especially Spawn and Clown's makeup.
Some of the visual FX, the morphing and stuff was good. The devil was awful and CG cape is questionable.
That song by Filter was awsome.

Soundtrack had some ok stuff that's about it.

John Leguizamo did a great job with what he was given in the Clown character. That really is the only thing that saved this movie from being rated a 1 for me.

I agree. without John Leguizamo's acting that kept me in splits throughout the whole movie Spawn wasn't very remarkable.

I loved the costume. He didn't wear the mask enough, though.

melinda clarke Of course...

One of the sexiest women of the time. She was way hotter than Spawn's wife too. Too bad she died so soon :(

Melinda Clarke is a gorgeous woman and looks great in her costume. She looks like she could have just stepped out of a comic book, or a sci-fi themed Skinemax movie!

The whole Spawn concept and "extreme-image comics style" visuals are really interesting and translate well to the big screen.

All of this and the great Nicol Williamson! Spawn is a wonderful movie; who needs Zack Snyder or Joss Whedon? They could remake it, but it'd never be this much fun! 1990s shlock at its best!

The costume looked great, even the transformation scenes look good. The Clown steals the show with the makeup and performance. Very underrated. The Violator demon was also the best technical achievement. I think they spent most of the budget making it look good, and that's why the hell scene looks a bit crap.
The whole vibe has a very dark punk rock tone that fits it very well. A lot of scenes look like they jumped straight off an album cover.
