Is that an actual shipping lane? It was such a major plot device yet seems so implausible.

IDK, but we do build sea going Navy ships on Lake Michigan. They might use to let sea going ships in a long time ago, but the zebra mussel invasion should've stopped that.

Yes, the only part that I questioned.
In the book the events take place in New York City, they moved stuff to Chicago, and logistically had only the lake available for the ship to come in.
