Why in film and TV versions does Maxim never kill Rebecca by shooting her like in the book? He even had a gun in this version but didn't use it!

Maybe they're referencing Othello, where Othello strangles Desdemona because he thinks she's having an affair? Or the shooting would be too "bloody"? I'm really not sure.
