Who was that 'famous' guy supposed to be?

Close to the end of the movie when Kevin Costner "the postman" goes to that port city and meets that delegate of the city he says " hey i know you, you used to be famous" Who was that guy supposed to be? How was he famous?

reply

it's tom petty playing himself. the mayor is nameless, but if he had a name it'd be tom petty.

So to ask the question who's Tom Petty?

Cant be that famous

If you cant make a good film then at least make it a short one

I'm pretty sure not knowing who Tom Petty is might be grounds for a bludgeoning. I love that horse-faced son of a bitch.

reply

I'm with Aziz! Tom Petty is my all time favorite rock and roller.

reply

Tom Petty playing himself was an interesting cameo. Reminds me of the movie The Running Man when Mick Fleetwood plays what is implied to be an older version of himself.

reply

Have you ever seen Jerry Maguire?

reply

ever watched MTV?
Tom Petty owned the first few years of MTV.

reply

Coffeefilter, if you didn't know who John Lennon was, would that mean he can't be to famous either? You've been missing out on a musical God.

reply

Dont come around here no more.

Enjoy it while it lasts

reply

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around.

reply

But in the movie he did, in fact, have to live like a refugee.

reply

it's good to be King, of your own little town, er, mayor

reply

no excuse for not knowing who he is.

even LESS for not googling him before you asked this.

Ignore them. Tom Petty supplied the voice of Lucky in KING OF THE HILL.

I guess if you have never listened to Tom Petty's music, you wouldn't know who he was. I got to say even my 9 year old son knew who he was.

Time to broaden your music library...you need to listen to some of that "old stuff" from the 1940's to now.

It must be a Dr. Who Convention!!!

reply

yeah i can understand not knowing who the lead singer of pearl jam is or what the dudes from oasis look like...but tom petty, bob dylan, steven tyler, flea, anthony keadis, mic jagger, sting, elton john, billy joel...etc...you need to know what these guys look like...for the love of music!

I will toast you with my heartiest wine

reply

Seriously, how can someone now know who Tom Petty is. I'm 33 and even I know that.

reply

I had a good guess it was Tom Petty, but I would know plenty of people that wouldn't know who he was, young and old...they just don't listen to his particular brand of music. Life is more than what is inside your world.

Wayne Enterprises buys and sells companies like Stark Industries

reply

He was on MTV for like 10 straight years though.

reply

Heh...I haven't even hit my 30s yet and I know him. He's one of my favorite musicians! I thought his cameo was awesome :D

I think a lot of people who might not know what he looks like would still know his music. Even if you're "not into it", you're bound to have heard it at some point...light classic rock/pop has turned into a sort of elevator music in a lot of grocery and convenience stores. Or is that just Florida?

I love music, but I don't think that has much to do with why I know who Tom Petty is. I've seen his picture, but never considered what he does "music". Not my cup of tea, I guess you could say.

reply

So just out of curiosity, if Tom Petty's stuff isn't music to you (which is a strange way of saying you don't care for his stuff), what is?

reply

I have about 1000 albums and about 500 CDs, so I do like some music. Tom Petty was just another of many that I don't particularly care for. I've noticed that I feel the same about most of the "nasal" singers, Dylan, Willie Nelson, etc.

reply

Tom Petty wrote over 100 songs, and released 13 studio albums. 5 went platinum and 5 more went gold. Pluse he had some of the earliest and most popular videos on MTV. Everyone would recognize him as someone famous, even if they weren't a fan of his music.

Anyone who didn't grow up in North America during the late 80s or early 90s could be excused for not knowing who Tom Petty is. I certainly was a big fan and yes he was extremely popular in his heyday. But come on it's like Australians expecting everyone worldwide to know who Jimmy Barnes is. Huge rockstar but nevertheless pretty much just in one corner of the world. But yeah in Oregon TP is well-known and I loved his cameo appearance.

reply

"But come on it's like Australians expecting everyone worldwide to know who Jimmy Barnes is."

How about Glenn Shorrock? I've been a big fan of his ever since he came out with his solo album Villain of the Peace. Been waiting for the rest of the world to "discover" him, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen while he's alive. Many people like his work in the Little River Band, but haven't heard his solo work.

reply

Well it IS an American film made for Americans so we'd know Tom Petty.

Thank God it wasn't Shaq

"Yeah, I usseda played bassetball"

reply

Bahahaha!! Shaq ^^^^

But yeah. Tom Petty? Come on! Anyone born in the US over age 27 currently and knowing anything about POP culture should remember Tom Petty. LOL!

I would love to see a Post appocalyptic film with Kevin Costner playing Kevin Costner! It would be awesome. He already has a huge ranch with horses etc and because of all his movie making experience he has all these primitive skills, fighting, apocalyptic knowledge etc, he would be the guy I would look for first! Ha!!

Or maybe I would seek out Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortenson!

reply

He does seem like a hunting fishing, hammer a nail, change a tyre kinda guy. Regarding his horse ranch I read somewhere that he takes in mistreated and neglected horses and gets them healthy again then finds good homes for them, don't know if it's true or not, just something I read once but it does seem like a Kevin Costner kind of thing, like something he would do. Every time I watch this I always think Tom Petty should move to Pineville and join the band.

I've been living in a small town in Oregon for 22 years now. When I moved here we had school board members named Tom Petty and Gary Wright. Nice coincidence, especially after The Postman.

reply

I also live in Oregon, though not currently in a small town. I used to live in Newport on the coast, which is a small town. What small town are you from?

Funny thing killin' a man. You take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have.

I like Tom Petty's music, but can see how someone may not know who he is. I listen to a lot of older music but couldn't tell you who some of the newer artists are. I had to look up Lana Del Ray. Also, Tom Petty was and is famous but not The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Paul McCartney famous. He is on that second level of musician famous. He is a great singer and musician but I can see how someone would not know who he is.

reply

You're right. I wouldn't recognize most of the people whose music I've heard, I listened to them. That is (or should be) the basis for their fame.
I wouldn't recognize most football players in street clothes, either. I may root for their team and value their efforts, but they are wearing helmets. Most of us would recognize a famous quarterback necause they not only get a lot of close-ups, but are also frequently in commercials

reply

Paul McCartney - isn't that the old dude that Kanye did a duet with? According to his twitter fans, Kanye gonna make that old dude famous!

OK, back to the original topic....Who is Tom Petty?

reply

I usually don't reply to myself, but that was my lame attempt at humor. Early Beatles aren't my cup of tea, but I did enjoy their later stuff....And on that note, didn't Tom Petty make George Harrison famous when he allowed him to join the Traveling Wilburys?

reply

Actually, it was Jeff Lynne that made them famous.

reply

I can see younger people not knowing who he is, a twenty something I work with asked me a while ago "who's Elvis Presley" he had never heard of him. I was stunned.

reply

A co-worker (who I like) has asked me in the past who was Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart and Al Capone. People are forgotten. I read once that on average most of us have about seventy years after our death until there is nobody left who actually knew us personally. Eventually most of us are forgotten - even by descendants.

reply

Interesting, kind of makes sense when you think about it, I know absolutely nothing about my great grandparents not even their names.

reply

there you go. I can see why some people are big on family history.

that sucks

Clark who?

reply

LOL. Very good.

reply

Elvis is ancient though. Petty was on MTV.

reply

i came to this board to ask the same question.

tom petty who?

reply

Never watched MTV?

reply

Those who have to ask who Tom Petty is are the same people who have no idea that MTV stands for MUSIC television and that they (in the olden days) played music videos 23 hours a day.

reply

I remember those days. VH1 was the same way for the easy listening crowd. Heck I remember when AMC was only on the air for about six hours out of the day and played classic old movies. Not a zombie or Mad Man in sight back then. That was in the eighties for those who are interested.
