The warhead exploding at the start

Around the start of the film when the bad guys are stealing the warheads they put what looked like explosives on one warhead and left it on the train, and then after the train crashes the explosive explodes and it sets the nuke off somehow.

How do the explosives set the warhead off? With nuclear bombs don't they have to be set off using some sort of implosion method to combine the substances to reach critical mass?
If so then wouldn't the explosion be just a dirty bomb?

reply

Actually the bad guys set a timer on the warhead itself, or at least one of the MIRVs. The explosion was nuclear.

Now the question is if the other warheads in the train went off as well.....Sure as hell the explosion looked big enough

Thanks for the answer.

Isnt that quite a vital bit in the movie? In fact the difference in time between the train crash and the nuke going off was what was used by the strategists to conclude that it was a deliberate act.

Hey, I thought you had her at 'Squishy Ball'

We know that Kordorov stole 8 nukes from the train and detonated one. We don't know if there were more nukes on the train. I doubt it, because Kordorov would have had time to steal those as well. If there were other bombs on the train, the one nuke going off probably wouldn't have made them go nuclear either. Remember the bombs they stole had to be detonated a particular fashion to go nuclear. The nuke going off on the train would simply vaporize them along with everything else.

Actually that's not quite true.

He stole nine (not eight) of the ten warheads in the missile. Many ICBMs carry multiple warheads. The reason you got eight was probably because they recovered eight from the truck, minus the one that caused the ruckus that resulted in the rest of the movie. Otherwise you are spot on.

reply

none of you are spot on anything...nuclear trigger devices are way more sophisticated than merely punching in a digital timer to get a full scale detonation...

and the remainder of the story is also flawed....when the srike team runs down the warheads and recovers 8 of the 10, they wouldn't return without getting number nine....they would have run that guy into the ground....every radioactive warhead has a signature....oh, and its doubtful that an army ltc would be john wayne in such a case...

except for the story line, getting the payload inside the u.s. is highly unlikely...not quite the same as making a urea bomb...btw, hollywood trains more terrorists than any university...think about it...

Ok...to ME...THIS is what it looked like. (and I DO know a bit about nukes--though nothing "classified", but open literature IS pretty detailed nowadays--probably TOO detailed, if you ask me.)

ONE of the RV's was left onboard the train to purposely detonate and destroy it and everything else around for a good distance, say about 5-10 miles or so. This would cover the theft of the other 9 RV's. (Remember --it said a 500-700 KT yield was suspected from the blast. Today--that is NOT a "small blast".)

The "timer device" that they placed on the one RV was most likely some sort of "test fixture" that could test the various devices in the RV, that are needed to initiate the various processes needed to produce a full thermonuclear blast, such as gas boost, neutron injection, implosion charge triggering, etc, to insure they were in "good order" during routine missile maintenance. As such--it WOULD be able to detonate the warhead, if programmed to do so. Keep in mind--it FIT the connector on the RV, so it would HAVE to be something like that. (and the terrorist in charge would have had access to such a device, too, since he was involved in the missile program.) And the "implosion charges" mentioned by a poster before WERE INSIDE of the warhead, surrounding the "primary", that was shown near the end of the movie.(although..THAT was pretty hokey, too...but I WILL NOT elaborate on why...)

Did you actually watch the film? Over and over again the characters discussed the theft of 10 nukes.

In case you did not know, you can go back and edit your comment.
