End Explosion

I like the movie, really I do.

That said, it's curious how they survive at the end. Any convention explosion (and I'm not even discussing nuclear or weapons grade plutonium) sends fragments travelling ~22,000 ft/s. In contrast, a 135gr 9mm round travels at a pokey 1,200 ft/s.

Clooney and Kidman would have been subjected to hundreds of stain glass (ok, some glass can melt) and rock debris travelling at hypersonic speeds right through their bodies. Also, high explosions generally yield more of a pressure wave and less of a fireball.

Still, very cool film.

You right about the possibilty of shrapnel and the pressure wave unless it was how they left the bomb when they jumped through the window. It's been a while since I saw the movie but he was propped up against an alter so if they left the exposed explosive package facing a stone/granite alter it might have deflected the blast or reduced the shrapnel or at least sent it in another direction. If it was facing out towards them, they would have need a lot more medical attention.

The explosion would not have to be all that violent. Remember, in nuclear weapons, the entire point of the explosive package is to direct all its force inward in a perfectly symmetrical pattern to compress the core and cause it to start an uncontrolled fusion reaction. The explosive package thus does not have to that powerful. Further, it is designed to direct its force inward, not outward.

So the blast could be surviveable. There would be a lot of plutonium to clean up, but if you notice the blast goes off AFTER they are through the window and have thrown themselves onto the ground, so they avoided the brunt of the glass and could be possibly shielded from any fallout as they were then quickly evacuated from that area.

And even if it didn't go nuclear, wouldn't they have a dirty bomb that just exploded? And what about being exposed to a plutonium core? Radiation?

There was this thing, and then the gun didn't have an owner anymore.

I think they would at least be deafened from a bomb like that, if it were real I would expect mangled and broken bodies. The three to 5 second running start would not be enough to escape the primer charge of such a device.
As far as radiation is concerned. It might be cautioned that neither of them have children and maybe they should be tested regularly from then on, but I doubt they face much risk, their exposure was brief. There were people closer to the bomb for longer periods of time. The rest of the delegation on the airplane to NY had hours of exposure, and could become symptomatic soon. Maybe the drivers and passengers of the same car from the airport to the Hotel were around it long enough for serious consequences in a decade or more.
One could google the science, just don't get too curious or you can expect your efforts to be rewarded by getting you put on a list or two. Any official inquiry to your ISP gets a response. We have been warned that these lists are being compiled to help fight terrorism.
The collectors of this information harbor suppositions that you have a reason to access those monitored subjects. These paranoid, patriotic people are paid to prevent anything they believe endangers their mission of protecting America from all threats both foreign and domestic. Many are empowered to make a persons life miserable.
Consider this; Which organization is it, whose questions do not fuel rumor? Is it the same one your employer enjoys filling out extra paperwork about you for? Or is it the one whose Agents your associates like to have hang around and impede the natural flow? In some circles, these actions are part of a pre-investigation inventory. Even this amount of interest could influence a persons direction in life. If one became aware of it happening around them, then attempt to capitalize on it, they risk more than themselves. Suspicion always overrides reason. Although retrospect may claim otherwise.
Asking how much of what grade of explosive it takes to set off the same core described in the movie could be a risky search. Heat and magnitude of the blast would be a step deeper in it. Specifics on the exposure to weapons grade dirty bomb materials may be a safer search, unless you are closer to a source of these materials than some would consider appropriate.
So maybe these questions should stay academic. Unless someone wants to filter the answers back here.
