Wow Kidman is awful in this...

I didn't find her performance believable in the slightest, and Clooney delivers most of his lines so pitifully that you wonder if he's not just doing this for a paycheck.

I agree. This movie is so bad it's good.

It would have been better with a female lead who can play a credible scientist, like Jodie Foster in Contact.

reply

Agreed. Still not her worst though....To Die For was anything but. That movie made me want to rent The Chase with Charlie Sheen...that's how bad it was.

Clooney was decent in this one. I could see him playing a role like this again...much like Harrison Ford in Patriot Games, etc.

Hollywood...just one step away from reality.

I think her bad performance had more to do with the character as written. They set her up as "the woman in charge" and make her look totally weak and incompetent while Clooney gets to be the stereotypical macho jerk whose risky and strong arm tactics will always prevail over her girly feminine thinking.

How many times does Clooney mouth off about "this is the REAL WORLD!" and Kidman looking like a lost clueless child as she realizes, holy crap, people actually DIE(!) and get KILLED while trying to acquire and/or retrieve nuclear weapons. Also her crying after she "blows up the bomb" at the end.

Imagine if Judi Dench was playing that character. Dench wouldn't dare play such an idiot character. It's what makes her such a great M in the Bond films. She's the kind of woman who has stared death in the face and criticized its receding hairline.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

I agree that she was not credible. Her rabbit front teeth and little girl voice just did not make the character strong enough.

There was no love interest between her and Clooney throughout the movie, which I didn't mind, because every movie doesn't have to have that, but they dragged it in at the very end like an afterthought. Seemed very forced.

Also, what was with her gum chewing throughout one scene? Completely unnecessary-- looked like it got in the film by accident, when somehow no one on the set noticed it.

She was great! They made it clear she was the newbie temp head at the nuclear smuggling group, and she did a good job looking like someone who suddenly has a whole bunch of serious authority thrust upon her. In the White House, when the NSA tells her that her group is on point, she saw all those men staring at her waiting for orders, but she settled in and got to it.

And I loved her in To Die For, also. And Eyes Wide Shut.

She looked like a child who had inherited power. No credibility, no ability to make proper decisions and delegate. Weak, indecisive and a moral vacuum. She couldn't hardly have been a worse character. The actress ideally suited that role.

reply

Well he did Batman & Robin the same year so it was not a good time for Clooney.
