I think the point of it was to show what a great lawyer Casey was.
It wasnt so much the one question about the sneakers that made Washington crack. Casey was riling him with his entire line of questioning. His tone of voice was mocking and contemptuous throughout.
If that question about sneakers hadnt pushed JW over the edge, Casey would have carried on pushing buttons until something snapped, because he knew that - no matter what coaching his lawyers had given him, JW couldnt resist provocation.
I thought it was to show his insanity, to snap at something so small. I thought they were going to go for an insanity defense if the "police being a hitman" thing didn't work.
